UN Spends Around $100 Million Annually On Activities Against The Government Of Israel And Against The IDF, New Report Shows

The United Nations allocates roughly $100 million annually toward committees, reports, and mechanisms that are dedicated almost exclusively to singling out Israel, according to a new analysis released by the Permanent Mission of Israel to the UN.

Why it matters

The relationship between Israel and the United Nations has long been contentious, but this new financial analysis suggests the tension is structurally embedded in the UN’s finances. Israeli officials argue that this funding reveals an “orchestrated campaign” within the international body, where significant portions of the UN budget are utilized not for humanitarian aid, but for political advocacy and propaganda against the Jewish state. This comes at a time when the UN is finalizing its upcoming budget, raising questions about international taxpayer money and neutrality.

What to know

According to the findings from the Israeli Permanent Mission to the UN and International Organizations, the $100 million figure encompasses a wide network of bodies and activities.

“Today we actually showed that these are orchestrated campaigns, well-funded and well-established within the UN budget,” Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told The Jerusalem Post. He noted that the funds, expected to be approved in the coming days, are spent on activities directly opposing the Israeli government and the IDF.

The report identifies several key areas of spending:

  • UNRWA: The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees sits at the center of this system. The agency requests approximately $86 million annually, with roughly $80 million allocated from the UN’s routine budget. About 60% of these funds cover international staff salaries.
  • Human Rights Council: The Council in Geneva and its commission of inquiry on Israel—established in 2021 with an open-ended mandate—costs an estimated $4 million annually.
  • Reports and Debates: The UN produces at least 100 reports and holds dozens of debates annually regarding Israel and the Palestinians. The analysis claims these are often repetitive and one-sided, costing tens of thousands of dollars for production and translation alone.

Danon emphasized that while some funding goes to direct committees addressing Palestinian issues, other funds are “disguised under different names and organizations,” though the resulting activities remain “pure propaganda.”

What people are saying

Israeli officials state that this exposure of funds is not an attempt to defund humanitarian aid or silence legitimate criticism, but rather to highlight a system they believe normalizes discrimination.

“We are sharing the information, and we are grateful to the US mission, which is taking a moral stand against the funding of these bodies,” Danon said. “Despite the huge amount of money directed against Israel, we will continue to stand strong and proud against the bias of UN organizations.”

Regarding the specific bodies involved, the report highlights that the Human Rights Council has increasingly adopted language regarding “genocide accusations” and economic warfare, including compiling a “blacklist” of companies operating in Israeli-controlled areas. Furthermore, despite concerns over neutrality and reports of Hamas infiltration, the analysis notes that UNRWA continues to receive preferential treatment and remains exempt from budgetary reforms facing other UN bodies.

What happens next

The United Nations is currently in the process of finalizing its new budget. According to Danon, the funding for these specific bodies is likely to be approved despite the objections raised by the Israeli mission.

“We are always trying,” Danon said when asked if Israel is attempting to shed light on these bodies. “But unfortunately, most countries tend to ignore it. And even though we exposed this, the UN will continue to fund these activities.”

As the budget is finalized, the Israeli mission intends to continue highlighting how these funds allegedly fuel international legal action and strengthen global BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaigns against the state.
