U.S. Apprehends ‘Stateless, Sanctioned Dark Fleet Tanker,’ Marking Third Seizure of Operation Southern Spear

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced the successful apprehension of the stateless, sanctioned dark fleet motor tanker M/T Sophia in a pre-dawn operation on January 7, 2026.

The Department of War coordinated the action with the Department of Homeland Security, apprehending the vessel without incident. M/T Sophia operated in international waters while conducting illicit activities in the Caribbean Sea.

The U.S. Coast Guard currently escorts M/T Sophia to the United States for final disposition.

This interdiction forms part of Operation Southern Spear, aimed at addressing illicit activity in the Western Hemisphere.

The announcement included thermal imagery video showing personnel boarding the tanker at night, with visible smoke from the stack and navigational data overlays marking the vessel’s position.

This action occurred on the same day as the seizure of another sanctioned tanker, the M/V Bella 1, in the North Atlantic. Prior seizures under related enforcement efforts include the tankers Skipper (December 10, 2025) and Centuries (late December 2025).
