The Dutch government has pledged an additional €700 million (~$812 million) in support for Ukraine in 2026, drawing the money from unspent allocations in the defence and foreign affairs budgets, according to DutchNews.
The extra funding consists of €500 million (~$580 million) from the Defence Ministry’s budget and €200 million (~$230 million) from the Foreign Affairs budget, Xinhua reported, citing a letter signed by the Dutch ministers of finance, defence and foreign affairs and sent to both chambers of parliament.
The decision follows a push in parliament for additional support for Kyiv, and ministers warned in*a letter referenced by DutchNews that the Netherlands would “reach its limits” again next year as it tries to free up more money.
Assistance to Ukraine from the Netherlands
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, the Netherlands has been among Ukraine’s key European backers. Dutch government figures cited by Xinhua put total Dutch support at around €13.5 billion in military assistance and about €3.5 billion in non-military support.
The Netherlands has also supplied major military equipment to Kyiv, including F-16 fighter jets and air defense support, as part of its broader military aid package, the Kyiv Independent reported.
One driver of the newly released funding is that money remained available in existing budgets. DutchNews reported that the Defence Ministry surplus was linked to delays in projects and currency effects, while the Foreign Affairs surplus included funds previously earmarked for the European Peace Facility, where additional Ukraine support has been blocked.
