Israeli Airstrike Kills Two Palestinians in Southern Gaza, Including a Girl — Reuters Says

An Israeli airstrike killed at least two Palestinians, including a child, and wounded several others in southern Gaza on Monday, according to medical officials.

What to Know

Hospital staff at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said the strike hit the southern Gaza city, killing two people and injuring four others, including children, according to Reuters.

The Israeli military said the strike targeted a Hamas militant who was allegedly planning an attack against Israeli forces operating in southern Gaza.

Medical sources said the attack struck a tent sheltering displaced families in the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis, an area from which Israeli forces had withdrawn under the ceasefire agreement, according to Anadolu Agency.

Ceasefire Context

Israel has continued airstrikes in Gaza since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect in October. Israeli officials say the strikes are aimed at preventing militant attacks or destroying infrastructure.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 422 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began, while Gaza militants have killed three Israeli soldiers during the same period.

Broader Background

Local health authorities say Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed more than 71,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and left much of the territory in ruins following more than two years of fighting.
