In the wake of the U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026, President Donald Trump has renewed his push for U.S. control over Greenland, stating that America “needs” the territory for national security and linking it to broader hemispheric interests.
In a firm social media post, Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir has voiced strong support for Greenland amid renewed U.S. pressure under President Donald Trump to acquire the vast Arctic territory. The statement underscores a growing chorus of rejections from Nordic nations and Europe, even as Trump continues to advocate for U.S. control over Greenland for strategic and security reasons.
Kristrún Frostadóttir on X: “Greenland is part of the Danish Kingdom. Nothing about Greenland without Greenland. Iceland stands firmly with its friends.” The post, also in Icelandic, emphasizes self-determination and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.
Frostadóttir’s statement aligns with swift rejections from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s leadership, who have dismissed any notion of transfer or annexation as unacceptable. They stress that Greenland’s future must be decided by its people, amid concerns over Trump’s rhetoric following the Venezuela action.
The episode highlights tensions in Arctic diplomacy, with Nordic allies united against external pressures while Trump continues to advocate for expanded U.S. influence in the region.
