On January 6, 2026, President Donald Trump addressing House Republicans, highlighting his emphasis on the importance of the upcoming midterm elections.
“Thanks. You got to win the midterms because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be—I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached. We don’t impeach them, you know why? Because they’re meaner than we are. We should have impeached Joe Biden for 100 different things.”
The comments were made during a closed-door meeting between President Trump and House Republicans on January 6, 2026. This meeting occurred as Republicans prepare for the 2026 midterm elections, where control of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate seats will be contested.
Trump’s reference to impeachment draws on historical events from his first term (2017-2021), during which he was impeached twice by the Democratic-controlled House: first in 2019 over allegations related to Ukraine, and again in 2021 following the January 6 Capitol riot. He was acquitted both times by the Senate.
In contrast, during Trump’s second term beginning in 2025 and while Republicans controlled the House in prior sessions, no formal impeachment proceedings were initiated against former President Joe Biden, despite Republican investigations into his family’s business dealings and other matters.
