“ICE Is the American Gestapo,” Stephen King Declares, Adding His Voice to Widespread Criticism of Federal Immigration Tactics as Minneapolis Protests Escalate

Bestselling author Stephen King sparked controversy by posting “ICE is the American Gestapo” on social media, injecting himself into a heated national debate over the conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. King, one of America’s most widely read authors known for his prolific work in horror and suspense, has long been a vocal commentator on social and political issues, using his platform to weigh in on topics ranging from gun policy to civil liberties.

King’s characterization of ICE echoes language previously used by some Democratic lawmakers to criticize the agency’s tactics—most notably in a statement about Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. In that instance, Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois accused Noem and the Department of Homeland Security of employing “Gestapo-like tactics,” saying that communities across the country “have seen ICE’s Gestapo-like tactics firsthand” and arguing that those actions justified her impeachment resolution against the secretary.

The latest flashpoint comes amid Operation Metro Surge, a large-scale federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis that has drawn intense public scrutiny and widespread protests. The deployment of thousands of ICE agents, part of what the Department of Homeland Security calls its largest domestic enforcement initiative ever, intensified after the fatal January 7 shooting of Renée Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, by an ICE officer during a Minneapolis operation. Federal officials have characterized the incident as self-defense, while local leaders and witnesses dispute that account, sparking protests, including large demonstrations and a statewide general strike against the federal presence.

The protests have followed other contentious ICE activity in Minnesota, where local law enforcement and civil rights advocates have raised concerns about aggressive tactics. A federal judge recently issued curbs on immigration agents’ conduct amid claims of excessive force and violations of protesters’ rights.

Critics argue that the surge—including traffic stops, detentions of U.S. citizens, and confrontations with demonstrators—has eroded trust between local communities and federal law enforcement. Minnesota officials, including the state’s governor and Minneapolis mayor, have openly challenged the federal presence, calling for transparency, accountability, and restraint.

Supporters of the operation, including Vice President JD Vance, have defended the enforcement efforts, framing them as necessary to address illegal immigration and associated criminal activity while urging cooperation from local authorities.

King’s remark adds to a broader cultural conversation about immigration enforcement and civil liberties, reflecting how high-profile figures outside government are shaping public perceptions of federal immigration policy. Whether his comment influences political debate around ICE, or resonates with the intensifying protests in Minnesota and beyond, it underscores the deep divisions over how the United States manages enforcement and the rights of individuals caught in its crosshairs.
