Denmark, Greenland to Meet Vance, Rubio on Wednesday Amid Trump’s takeover Push

The foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland will meet U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday at the White House, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Tuesday, as President Donald Trump renews his push to acquire the Arctic island.

Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt requested the meeting with Rubio following Trump’s recent escalation of threats to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark.

“U.S. Vice President JD Vance also wanted to participate in the meeting, and he will host the meeting, which will therefore be held at the White House,” Rasmussen told reporters in Copenhagen.

“Our reason for seeking the meeting we have now been given was to move this whole discussion… into a meeting room where we can look each other in the eye and talk about these things,” he added.

Trump first proposed U.S. acquisition of Greenland in 2019 during his first term, a suggestion that drew widespread opposition, including from some Republicans in Washington.

The renewed rhetoric has sparked satirical commentary, such as a cartoon by Swiss political cartoonist Patrick Chappatte, depicting U.S. military figures offering “combs and lovely mirrors” to Inuit leaders in a parody of colonial-era trades, with the caption implying a dismissive barter for the territory.

Denmark has governed Greenland for centuries, but the territory has pursued greater self-rule since 1979, with all parties in its parliament supporting the long-term goal of full independence.
