Trump Tells Reporters to Take Seats as Air Force One Hits Rough Air — Report

President Donald Trump abruptly ended a press gaggle aboard Air Force One on Tuesday evening after the aircraft encountered turbulence while traveling to Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, according to a report from the Irish Star.

In an audio clip shared on social media, Trump can be heard discussing his policy of having no tax on tips, overtime, and social security before cutting the conversation short. “I think it’s better to go up and take our seats, it’s a pretty rough flight,” the president reportedly told reporters, then saying, “Bye everybody, I hope to see you again,” earning a laugh from the press.

The Pennsylvania Visit

Trump was traveling to Mount Airy Casino Resort to deliver remarks on affordability and the economy. The president was originally scheduled to speak at 6:10 pm, but according to the Irish Star, by 6:45 pm he had still not shown up to the event.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent kept the crowds entertained while the president made his way there. Bessent said to the crowd, “I hear Scranton is Joe Biden’s hometown. But as far as I can tell, this is Trump country.”

Political Context

The visit to Pennsylvania is no coincidence. Polls in the swing state show that about 54% of Pennsylvanians disapprove of his job performance, according to Civiqs. Polls consistently show that public trust in Trump’s economic leadership has faltered, and Republican support in last month’s off-cycle elections showed an unmistakable decline.

The White House is reportedly seeking to encourage voters that the economy is on the verge of a major upturn under Trump’s leadership. Ahead of the trip to Pennsylvania, White House spokesperson Kush Desai said “much work remains” but that “putting an end to Joe Biden’s inflation and affordability crisis has been a Day One priority for President Trump.”

Trump has repeatedly blamed his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, for inflation, among other issues the U.S. is currently facing. On December 8, his administration announced a deal to officially end a major student loan repayment program implemented under the Biden administration.

“We inherited a total mess from the Biden administration,” Trump said on December 8. “The Democrats caused the affordability problem, and we’re the ones that are fixing it.”
