President Donald Trump posted a new meme on his Truth Social account this afternoon, poking fun at captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro just hours after U.S. forces took him into custody during an overnight operation.
The meme, shared in one of Trump’s recent posts, appears to reference older footage of Maduro mocking others for being “cowards,” now contrasted with his current situation. Trump has been active on the platform throughout the day, following up on earlier posts about the operation itself.
The post comes amid a fast-moving series of events that started early Saturday. U.S. Special Forces carried out a raid in Caracas, capturing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from a safe house. The operation involved knocking out power in parts of the city and targeted military sites, leading to explosions reported across the capital.
Trump announced the capture in the early morning hours on Truth Social, later holding a press conference at Mar-a-Lago where he said the U.S. would temporarily oversee Venezuela during a transition period. He described the raid as a success, with Maduro and his wife flown out and eventually landing in upstate New York.
Maduro faces longstanding U.S. charges related to narco-terrorism and drug trafficking conspiracies. He’s expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan soon, along with his wife on related charges.
In Venezuela, streets remained mostly calm on Saturday, with some soldiers patrolling and small gatherings of supporters. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez appeared on state TV, calling the capture a “kidnapping” and demanding the couple’s release.
International reactions have varied, with some Latin American leaders condemning the action and others staying quiet so far. The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on the matter early next week.
Trump’s meme post quickly gained attention online, fitting his pattern of using social media to comment on big developments in real time. It’s the latest in a string of updates he’s shared today about the Venezuela situation.
