Trump Accuses Gavin ‘Newscums’ California of Being ‘More Corrupt Than Minnesota’, Says Investigation has begun

President Donald J. Trump reignited political fire on Tuesday with a Truth Social post accusing California Gov. Gavin Newsom of corruption. Trump wrote that “California, under Governor Gavin Newscum, is more corrupt than Minnesota, if that’s possible,” and asserted that a “Fraud Investigation of California has begun.” He thanked his audience for attention to the matter but did not provide details about the alleged investigation’s scope, who is conducting it, or specific allegations.

Trump’s comments directly target Gov. Gavin Newsom, with the president using a derogatory nickname and suggesting that California’s leadership and institutions are plagued by more corruption than Minnesota’s — a state recently under heavy scrutiny for widespread fraud scandals. Newsom’s office has not publicly confirmed any formal state fraud investigation tied to Trump’s post.

The post draws comparison to the ongoing controversy in Minnesota, where widespread fraud in social service and aid programs has attracted national attention. In Minnesota, multiple fraud schemes — including what federal authorities describe as some of the largest COVID-era fraud cases in the country — have led to numerous indictments and convictions, and have influenced political discourse. Gov. Tim Walz recently announced he will not seek a third term, in part to focus on managing these fraud challenges.

The Minnesota situation has included federal actions such as the freeze of child care funding and expanded investigations into alleged misuse of public funds, which Trump and others have highlighted as examples of Democratic mismanagement. Walz’s responses have emphasized cooperation with law enforcement and punitive measures against fraud offenders.

Analysts note that Trump’s statement leverages these scandals to intensify criticism of Democratic governors ahead of key elections, using inflammatory comparisons to draw attention to both California and Minnesota governance issues.
