“Reporter: ‘Why do you feel it’s appropriate to use an official White House event to promote your documentary?’
First Lady Melania Trump: ‘This is not promotion. We are here to celebrate the release of the hostages.’”
First Lady Melania Trump faced direct questioning from reporters over whether a White House event honoring freed American hostages was being used to promote her new documentary, an accusation she firmly rejected as she stood alongside two former captives and their family members.
“It is captured on camera and available to see in my film “Melania.”

The exchange came during a meeting at the White House with Aviva and Keith Seagull, American Israeli hostages who were freed after being held in captivity by Hamas. Aviva was captured on October 7, 2023, and held for 51 days, while Keith remained captive for 484 days. The event was intended to recognize their release and highlight their experiences, though it drew added scrutiny after Trump referenced her film while describing her earlier meeting with Aviva.
In her opening remarks, Melania Trump recounted meeting Aviva Seagull in New York in January 2025 after her release. “It was an emotional meeting, and it is captured on camera and available to see in my new film, Melania,” Trump said. She also described receiving two children’s books from Aviva, which she later gave to her husband while explaining the circumstances of the hostages and their captivity.
Aviva Seagull used the event to thank Melania Trump and President Trump for their involvement in efforts to bring the hostages home. “It’s an honor and a privilege, and I’m eternally grateful to have the opportunity to say that to you in person,” she said, crediting their support during her time in captivity. She also spoke about her ongoing humanitarian work, including recent efforts with an Israeli aid organization at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, where she has been involved in providing access to clean water, sanitation, and education.
As reporters pressed further, the focus briefly shifted from the hostages to Trump’s documentary and whether its mention during the event amounted to promotion. Asked directly why she felt it was appropriate to promote the film during an official White House appearance, Trump pushed back on the premise of the question. “This is not promotion,” she said, adding that the meeting was arranged at the request of Aviva and Keith Seagull, who were in Washington to express their gratitude in person.
Melania emphasized that the purpose of the gathering was to honor the hostages and their survival, not to publicize her film. “We are here celebrating the release and life of those two incredible people,” she said, signaling an end to the event and urging reporters to move on. The meeting concluded with reflections on recovery, resilience, and humanitarian work following captivity. While questions about the documentary briefly overshadowed the gathering, the central focus of the event remained on the return of the hostages and their efforts to use their experiences to help others in need.
