Ten people, including three children, were killed when a private jet attempting an emergency landing crashed into an industrial warehouse and burst into flames in central Mexico, local authorities said on Monday.
The aircraft, traveling from the Pacific resort of Acapulco to Toluca, attempted to land on a soccer field in San Mateo Atenco, approximately 32 miles west of Mexico City, before striking the warehouse, according to state officials.
Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández confirmed all ten fatalities, including three minors. The warehouse stored fuel and gas tanks, prompting an immediate evacuation of surrounding areas.
EVACUATIONS ORDERED
Around 130 people were evacuated from the vicinity following the crash, San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz told Milenio Televisión. Secretary of Security for the State of Mexico Cristóbal Castañeda ordered the evacuation due to the volatile materials stored at the facility.
“It spun around like when a fan breaks loose,” local resident Octavio Contreras told reporters. “Then we heard the explosion, the truck even moved, and then we saw smoke coming out.”
The Civil Protection Firefighters of Toluca said in a Facebook statement they responded to the crash at the intersection of Industria Automotriz and Miguel Aleman in coordination with firefighters from Metepec and San Mateo Atenco.
“We continue to work in solidarity and jointly with state emergency bodies and neighboring municipalities to achieve the total fire extinguishing and safeguarding the population,” the statement said.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED
Photographs from the scene showed emergency responders near the charred warehouse with shattered windows and a scorched soccer field nearby.
The Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the crash. Officials have not yet identified the victims or disclosed the cause of the emergency that forced the attempted landing.
The incident occurred near Toluca International Airport, located about 31 miles southwest of Mexico City.
