In a landmark move for European aerospace, the Spanish Ministry of Defence has finalized a historic deal for 100 Airbus helicopters. Executed through the Directorate General for Armament and Material (DGAM), this multi-contract procurement represents the cornerstone of Spain’s National Helicopter Plan. The initiative is designed to replace aging airframes across all three branches of the Spanish Armed Forces, ensuring that the country maintains strategic autonomy and high-level operational readiness.
The order is exceptionally diverse, covering four distinct helicopter models tailored to specialized roles. The Army (FAMET) will receive 50 H145M light utility helicopters, many of which will be equipped with the HForce weapon system to support the Tiger attack helicopter fleet. Meanwhile, 31 NH90 tactical transport helicopters will be distributed among the Army, Navy, and Air and Space Force for special operations and amphibious warfare. The deal is rounded out by 13 H135s for advanced pilot training and 6 H175M super-medium helicopters intended for high-priority governmental transport.
Beyond the hardware, the agreement serves as a massive catalyst for Spain’s domestic industrial sector. Airbus Helicopters has committed to expanding its footprint in Albacete, transforming the site into a “Centre of Expertise” for digital capabilities and cybersecurity. This expansion is expected to create more than 300 direct, high-skilled jobs over the next three years. Additionally, a new international training center and a dedicated military customization facility will further cement Spain’s role as a key reference hub in the European aeronautical industry.
Spain’s Secretary of State for Defence, María Amparo Valcarce García, noted that this investment is essential for providing the Armed Forces with latest-generation assets necessary for national security. By merging military necessity with long-term industrial growth, Spain is not only modernizing its fleet but also fostering a sustainable aerospace ecosystem that will support Spanish and European defense for decades to come.
