Russia Launches Coordinated Attacks on Ukrainian Ports and Rail Lines — Ukraine Officials Say

Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault targeting Ukraine’s logistical backbone, damaging foreign-flagged vessels in southern ports and hitting railway facilities near the Polish border.

Why It Matters

The overnight strikes mark a continuation of Moscow’s systematic campaign against Ukraine’s economic lifelines, specifically targeting the maritime logistics essential for global food security. By hitting vessels flying flags from Slovakia, Palau, and Liberia, the attack underscores the international risks associated with operating in the Black Sea region. The strikes on railway infrastructure in Lviv Oblast—hundreds of miles from the front line—demonstrate Russia’s intent to disrupt supply chains across the entire country, not just in conflict zones.

What To Know

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched a coordinated attack utilizing one Iskander-M ballistic missile and 99 strike drones overnight on December 26. The primary targets were critical logistics hubs in the south and west of the country.

Oleksii Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister for Restoration, reported significant damage to port infrastructure in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions. In Odesa Oblast, Russian drones targeted port facilities, hitting grain elevators, a barge, and warehouses belonging to civilian companies. The strikes damaged vessels sailing under the flags of Slovakia and the Republic of Palau. Emergency crews were deployed to extinguish fires triggered by the blasts, while power outages were recorded across the oblast.

In neighboring Mykolaiv Oblast, a port terminal was struck, resulting in damage to a vessel flying the Liberian flag. Additionally, Russian Molniya drones caused power outages in the Mykolaiv district, according to the regional military administration.

The assault extended to western Ukraine, where drones damaged railway infrastructure near the Kovel station in Lviv Oblast, approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the Polish border. A locomotive and a freight railcar were damaged, and the blast wave shattered windows at a locomotive depot facility.

Despite the scale of the infrastructure damage, Kuleba confirmed that no casualties were reported.

What People Are Saying

Ukrainian officials have characterized the strikes as a deliberate attempt to strangle the nation’s economy. Minister Kuleba highlighted that these are “systematic attempts to destroy Ukraine’s maritime logistics to undermine the country’s economy and food security.”

Despite the damage, Kuleba emphasized the resilience of the network, stating via the Telegram messaging app that “despite Russia’s deliberate terror, Ukraine’s logistics system continues to function.”

Local authorities in Odesa had earlier reported a mass Shahed drone attack on Odesa, Izmail, and other settlements, noting that Moscow aims to cut Ukraine off from the Black Sea and sow chaos among civilians.

As of Friday, Russia has not commented on the specific strikes or the damage to foreign vessels.

What Happens Next

Immediate efforts in Ukraine will focus on extinguishing fires and repairing the damaged energy grid in Odesa and Mykolaiv to restore power to affected civilians and port operations. Railway crews will likely prioritize repairing the locomotive and tracks near Kovel to ensure the flow of goods toward the Polish border remains uninterrupted.

Internationally, the damage to foreign-flagged vessels may draw diplomatic condemnation from the affected nations, though it remains to be seen if this will lead to changes in insurance policies or security protocols for merchant ships operating in Ukraine’s southern ports. Ukrainian forces will continue to bolster air defenses around these critical logistic nodes in anticipation of further systematic attacks.
