Putin’s Ex-Defense Chief Suddenly Dies on Christmas Day After Being Fired, Russian State Media Says

Yuri Sadovenko, the former Russian deputy defence minister, has died suddenly on Christmas Day at the age of 56. Sadovenko was fired by Vladimir Putin in May 2024 during a sweeping Kremlin shake-up of the defence ministry.

Trusted ‘Keeper of Secrets’

Sadovenko, a Ukrainian-born Colonel-General, was particularly close to former defence minister Sergei Shoigu, acting as a trusted “gatekeeper” within the ministry. He was widely regarded as the holder of sensitive information during the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Russian state media reported that Sadovenko’s death was due to heart disease, although no previous illnesses had been reported. His sudden death adds to a pattern of unexpected fatalities among Russia’s elite since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022.

Part of a Grim Wave of Deaths

Sadovenko’s passing follows multiple recent deaths in Russia’s military, political, and corporate circles. This includes Lt-Col Stanislav Orlov, commander of a football hooligan battalion active in Ukraine, and Lt-Gen Fanil Sarvarov, killed in a car bomb in Moscow. Earlier this year, transport minister Roman Starovoit and former MP Buvaysar Saitiev also died suddenly, raising concerns among observers about the security of Russia’s inner circle.

Sadovenko’s personal life had also made headlines. His wife, Maria Kitaeva, reportedly left him for another deputy defence minister, Timur Ivanov, who was later dismissed and jailed for corruption. Such scandals have contributed to the perception of instability within Putin’s high command.

Other High-Profile Deaths

The wave of deaths extends beyond the defence ministry. Executives in Russia’s energy sector, including Lukoil’s Ravil Maganov and Vladimir Nekrasov, and Transneft vice-president Andrey Badalov, have died unexpectedly. Even propagandists such as Kirill Vyshinsky, a Russia Today executive, have reportedly died suddenly, despite previous reports of good health.

The sudden deaths, whether attributed to heart failure, accidents, or other causes, have created a growing sense of unease among observers tracking the Kremlin’s inner circle.

Implications

Sadovenko’s death, officially reported as natural, is the latest in a series of unexplained fatalities involving senior Russian officials, military leaders, and oligarchs. Analysts note that these events may affect the stability of Putin’s inner circle and raise questions about the security and decision-making within Russia’s defence and political structures.
