Poland activated its air defense systems and scrambled fighter jets on December 6, 2025, as Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.[1]
Poland’s Response
Polish Armed Forces deployed fighter jets and put air defense systems on high alert in response to Russia’s long-range aviation activity near their border. The alert lasted approximately four hours before forces returned to standard operational procedures.
Poland also temporarily closed two airports, Rzeszow and Lublin, during the operation. NATO allies assisted in the response, with Spanish and Czech air forces participating in protecting Polish airspace.
Polish officials described the action as having a “preventive nature” to secure airspace in areas adjacent to threatened regions.[2]
The Russian Attack
Russia launched 653 Shahed drones and 53 missiles, including cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missiles, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The assault caused “quite severe” damage to Ukraine’s power grid, with one power line to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant temporarily disconnected.
At least 8-9 people were killed and dozens injured in the attacks.
Context
The massive strike occurred as peace talks between Russia and Ukraine continued in Florida.[3] This is not the first time Poland has scrambled jets in response to Russian strikes, as the country shares a border with Ukraine and is a key NATO member.
No violations of Polish airspace were reported during the incident.[2]
