Petition for Trump’s Impeachment Surpasses 100,000 Signatures — “The American People Are Suffering and Can’t Afford to Be Patient Any Longer” — “Our System Was Built to Deal With Threats Like Donald Trump”

A petition calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump has surpassed 100,000 signatures, highlighting growing public calls for accountability over his actions since returning to office. The petition, organized by the non-partisan group Blackout The System, argues that “every branch of government needs to pursue justice and accountability for this administration’s actions.”

While reaching the milestone will likely raise the petition’s visibility, it will not trigger a formal response from the White House. The petition draws on the framework of the “We the People” system, a White House petition platform launched under President Barack Obama that required 100,000 signatures for an official response. The tool was widely used during Trump’s first term but was taken offline after President Joe Biden assumed office in January 2021.

Calls for Trump’s impeachment have grown in recent months, with some citing his controversial proposals, including his suggestion to annex Greenland. Republican Representative Don Bacon warned that the president’s talk of taking over the Danish territory could spark bipartisan impeachment efforts. Earlier this month, Trump also warned House Republicans that he could face a third impeachment if Democrats regain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

Trump has been impeached twice during his first term. In 2019, he faced charges over his effort to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into investigating the Biden family ahead of the 2020 election. He was impeached a second time in 2021 over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the January 6 Capitol riot. He was acquitted by the Senate in both cases.

As of early Wednesday, the petition had collected 104,894 signatures. It accuses Trump of “repeatedly” violating the U.S. Constitution and argues that his administration’s policies have left the most vulnerable in society in a state of despair. The petition cites attacks on immigrants, cuts to veterans’ benefits, undermining healthcare systems, reductions in essential food assistance, and the degradation of public schools and education. It also condemns what it describes as “relentless attacks on women and youth” and blames Trump for economic mismanagement, describing the economy as in “shambles” due to “short-sighted” policies.

“The American people are suffering and can’t afford to be patient any longer. The time has come to hold this administration accountable for its actions that have deeply harmed our society,” the petition states. “Every branch of government needs to pursue justice and accountability for this administration’s actions. This petition calls on all Americans to come together, to make our voices heard, and to demand the impeachment of Donald Trump.”

Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos, founder of American Opposition, which partnered with Blackout the System, said that impeachment represents “the healthiest pathway to ending this nightmare, as it removes the fascist regime while reasserting the power of our Constitution. Our system was built to deal with threats like Donald Trump. Our current failure is human. We need our representatives to wake up and use the tools the founders gave them to save our republic before it’s too late.”

Trump himself warned House Republicans earlier this month, saying, “You gotta win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be, I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.” Democratic Representative Al Green, whose second effort to impeach Trump was dismissed by the House in December, reaffirmed his commitment on January 6, stating, “I pledge to you that I will do all that I can, including make efforts to impeach Donald John Trump, for all that he has done to create this stain on the citadel of democracy.”

Despite the petition and ongoing calls for impeachment, it is unlikely that Trump will face formal proceedings in the coming months, as Republicans currently hold majorities in both the House and Senate. Voters, however, will have the opportunity to weigh in during the November midterm elections, and Democrats hope that regaining control of Congress could allow them to pursue a third impeachment during the final two years of Trump’s presidency.
