“Palestinian Is a Synonym for Evil,” Rep. Randy Fine Declares

Rep. Randy Fine, a Republican representative from Florida, sparked controversy this week with a social media post declaring, “Palestinian is a synonym for evil.” The statement came in response to a report detailing the prolonged captivity and abuse of Arbel Yehoud and her boyfriend Ariel Cunio by Hamas militants in Gaza. The couple endured more than a year in captivity, facing starvation, physical and psychological abuse, and the trauma of being forcibly separated.

Yehoud, 30, and Cunio, 28, were kidnapped on October 7, 2023, during a Hamas incursion into southern Israel. Over 482 days, Yehoud endured solitary confinement, repeated abuse, and the loss of family members, while Cunio was held separately and subjected to similar hardships. Both relied on smuggled messages to maintain hope and connection with each other, drawing strength from their relationship and the hope of eventual freedom. Yehoud was released on January 30, 2025, while Cunio remained in captivity until October 13, 2025. Both now face the ongoing challenges of trauma recovery, sleepless nights, and the destruction of their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, where they had lived since 2018.

The story also highlighted the experiences of other captives, including Romi Gonen, whose public account of sexual assault in captivity motivated Yehoud to share her own ordeal. Reports describe extreme violence, forced separation, and coercion, underscoring the severe humanitarian consequences of militant attacks in Gaza.

Fine, who represents Florida’s 6th District, is a founding member of the Sharia-Free America Caucus, a group of Republican lawmakers focused on preventing Sharia law from influencing American legal and social systems. At the caucus’s first press conference this week, Fine emphasized his opposition to any perceived influence of Sharia law in the United States and recounted multiple threats he had received due to his public statements on religious expressions. The caucus, co-founded by Reps. Chip Roy and Keith Self, now includes dozens of members and has positioned itself as a vocal force in debates over immigration, religious freedoms, and cultural integration.

Fine’s remarks on Palestinians come in the context of his broader political stance on what he characterizes as threats from Islamist groups. Critics have argued that his statements, including the recent social media post, risk conflating entire populations with militant actors, while supporters frame them as responses to documented violence by terrorist organizations. The release of Yehoud and Cunio, along with other hostage accounts, has drawn renewed attention to the human cost of militant violence in Gaza and the psychological trauma experienced by civilians.

The story of Yehoud and Cunio highlights both the personal and broader consequences of conflict, from physical abuse to emotional resilience and survival strategies. As Fine’s remarks circulate, they have drawn scrutiny in U.S. political circles and internationally, illustrating the tension between reactions to violence and the risks of broad generalizations in public discourse. The couple continues to navigate recovery, rebuilding their lives amid lingering trauma while raising awareness about the dangers faced by civilians in conflict zones.
