“Muslim-only housing developments have no place in Texas or anywhere in America!” Representative Keith Self said, criticizing a planned residential development in Plano, Texas, and highlighting his opposition to what he described as an attempt to implement Sharia law in the United States. Self’s remarks followed the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) launching a formal investigation into the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) and its affiliated development project known as “The Meadow” or “EPIC City.”

The HUD Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) confirmed it is examining allegations that the development may have violated the Fair Housing Act by engaging in religious and national origin discrimination. Complaints include promotional materials marketing the development as an exclusively “Muslim community” and describing it as “the epicenter of Islam in America.” Additional allegations involve financial terms requiring lot owners to subsidize a mosque and Islamic educational centers, as well as a tiered sales process giving preferential access to certain buyers.
HUD Secretary Scott Turner called the potential violations “deeply concerning” and emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring housing in Texas is accessible to all residents regardless of religion. “As HUD Secretary, I will not stand for illegal religious or national origin discrimination in housing and will ensure that this matter receives a thorough investigation,” Turner said.
Representative Self praised the investigation on social media, thanking President Donald Trump and Secretary Turner for their involvement. He also stated that Sharia law conflicts with the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law, asserting that it “has no place here.” Self has linked the development and its affiliated organizations to broader concerns about the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), stating that they “aim to destroy America from the inside out” and threaten American culture and heritage.

The controversy comes as Self and Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) lead the newly formed Sharia Free America Caucus in Congress. Launched on December 18, 2025, the caucus has grown to twenty-six members from seventeen states in under one month. The group, Self said, is dedicated to opposing Sharia law, which he argues stands “in direct opposition to our country and is totally anathema to the concept of individual freedom and our founding principles.” Roy echoed these concerns, calling Sharia a “direct threat to our Constitution and Western values” and saying the caucus aims to defend American legal and cultural traditions.
The controversy surrounding EPIC City reflects ongoing debates over religious expression, community development, and housing equity in the United States. Advocates for the development describe it as a cultural and religious community initiative, while critics argue that any housing project restricted to a single faith violates federal anti-discrimination laws and undermines the principle of equal access to housing. HUD’s investigation will determine whether the project’s practices constitute illegal discrimination.
As the review continues, local and national attention is likely to focus on the balance between religious freedom and anti-discrimination protections, while the growth of the Sharia Free America Caucus suggests the issue will remain prominent in congressional discussions for the coming months.
