Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she held a “good conversation” with U.S. President Donald Trump focused on security cooperation, drug trafficking, and bilateral economic ties, underscoring ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries amid heightened tensions over cartel violence and fentanyl trafficking.
Discussion Between Sheinbaum and Trump
Speaking on Monday, Sheinbaum said the discussion with Trump addressed security matters “with respect for Mexico’s sovereignty,” as well as efforts to reduce drug trafficking. She added that trade and investment were also part of the conversation.
Sheinbaum emphasized the tone of the exchange, writing that “collaboration and cooperation within a framework of mutual respect always yield results.”
“We had a very good conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. We talked about various topics, including security with respect to our sovereignties, the reduction of drug trafficking, trade and investments. Collaboration and cooperation within a framework of mutual respect always yield results.”
Broader Diplomatic Engagement on Security
The conversation between the two presidents followed diplomatic contacts at the cabinet level. On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente about the need for stronger cooperation to dismantle Mexico’s violent narco-terrorist networks and halt the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons.
U.S. Rhetoric on Cartels Raises Tensions
Trump’s remarks in recent weeks have added strain to the security dialogue. Last week, he told Fox News that drug cartels were “running Mexico” and suggested that the United States could strike land targets to combat them.
These comments were described as part of a series of escalating threats by Trump to deploy U.S. military force against drug cartels operating within Mexican territory.
