French President Emmanuel Macron warned Wednesday that any violation of Greenland’s sovereignty would trigger “unprecedented cascading consequences”, as U.S. President Donald Trump ramps up pressure to take control of the Arctic territory.
The statement came during a cabinet meeting, according to French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon, who quoted Macron as saying: “We do not underestimate the statements on Greenland. If the sovereignty of a European and allied country were affected, the cascading consequences would be unprecedented.” Bregeon added that France is following the situation “with the greatest attention” and “will act in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty.”
This directly references Trump’s repeated assertions that the U.S. should acquire Greenland—an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark—for national security and resource reasons, as covered in detail by Reuters. The warning highlights broader European concerns about potential fallout for NATO cohesion and transatlantic relations if forceful action is pursued, with additional context from Le Monde.
Earlier on Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s strong relationship with Greenland, assuring its people of European support amid the tensions.
Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the White House later that day, following weeks of escalating threats from Trump. Danish officials have firmly rejected any U.S. takeover.
In a significant show of solidarity, Macron announced that France would join Denmark in military exercises in Greenland: “At the request of Denmark, I have decided that France will participate in the joint exercises organized by Denmark in Greenland, Operation Arctic Endurance. First French military elements are already on their way. Others will follow.” (Translation)
The deployment signals heightened European commitment to defending allied sovereignty in the Arctic, with reports indicating troops from France and other NATO allies bolstering Denmark’s Operation Arctic Endurance exercises.
Analysts view Macron’s comments and the French participation as a clear deterrent message to Washington, underscoring risks to alliance unity if U.S. ambitions challenge established borders and international law, as further detailed in RFI and The Local France.
