Kash Patel’s Armored BMWs Add to Scrutiny Over FBI Director’s Use of Agency Resources

FBI Director Kash Patel is facing renewed scrutiny after the bureau confirmed it has purchased armored BMW vehicles for his official travel, a move that has drawn criticism amid an ongoing congressional inquiry into his use of taxpayer-funded resources.

The FBI confirmed to MS Now that it acquired an unspecified number of armored BMW X5 vehicles for Patel’s use. The outlet reported that Patel requested the vehicles in part to be less “conspicuous” while traveling, according to people familiar with the matter.

The decision marks a departure from long-standing FBI practice. Previous FBI directors have typically traveled in armored Chevrolet Suburbans, though similar BMW models are used by the U.S. government to transport State Department officials and diplomats in high-risk environments overseas.

The purchase has drawn criticism from some former Justice Department officials. Stacey Young, a former DOJ official and founder of the advocacy group Justice Connection, told MS Now the move was “an embarrassment,” arguing it reflected a broader pattern of questionable spending decisions by the bureau’s current leadership.

An FBI spokesperson defended the purchase, saying the vehicles were selected following a cost evaluation. FBI spokesman Ben Williamson said the BMWs were considered more cost-effective than other armored vehicle options available to the agency, though he declined to disclose the total cost or number of vehicles purchased. The FBI has not published a public cost breakdown related to the acquisition, according to statements provided through its official press office.

The controversy adds to existing scrutiny of Patel’s travel and security arrangements. Patel has previously faced criticism for using the FBI’s private jet for personal travel, including visits involving his girlfriend, and for reportedly assigning an FBI security detail to protect her. Patel has said he follows agency policy that bars FBI directors from flying commercially and maintains that he reimburses the government for personal travel as required.

Critics dispute whether the armored BMWs ultimately save taxpayer money. An anonymous source cited by MS Now said the vehicles cost less than half the price of a newly armored Suburban, which can exceed $480,000. A Democratic congressional aide disputed that claim, arguing the government typically secures discounts when purchasing multiple vehicles. The FBI declined to release documentation supporting either figure.

The BMW purchases come as House Democrats have launched an investigation into Patel’s use of taxpayer-funded resources. In a letter sent earlier this month, lawmakers requested detailed travel records, internal communications related to aircraft procurement, and documents involving FBI personnel responsible for managing government aviation assets. Copies of oversight correspondence are typically published through the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

The lawmakers also raised questions about the dismissal of an FBI aviation official amid the controversy over Patel’s personal travel. It remains unclear whether Patel has formally responded to the committee’s requests.

Patel has rejected allegations of misuse, calling criticism of his travel and security arrangements “nonsense” and “outright falsehoods.” In a December podcast appearance, he argued that his travel decisions have saved taxpayer money compared with previous administrations and said he is entitled to a private life while serving as FBI director.

A longtime ally of President Donald Trump, Patel assumed leadership of the FBI after serving in senior national security roles during Trump’s first term. His tenure has been marked by controversy, including the dismissal of senior FBI officials involved in investigations related to Trump—moves Patel has said were unrelated to political retribution.

It remains unclear whether the House investigation will result in further action, but lawmakers have indicated they intend to continue pressing for transparency surrounding FBI spending and leadership practices.
