JD Vance drew attention on social media for mocking Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s criticism of federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, responding to her claim that the Trump administration was using ICE operations to influence elections. Omar had posted, “‘ICE will leave Minnesota if you hand over your voter rolls’ tells you everything you need to know. This was never about immigration or fraud. It was always about rigging elections.” Vance replied, “We really want illegal aliens to vote in elections and will riot to ensure it is so,” a statement widely seen as a direct, sarcastic rebuttal to Omar’s allegations.

Omar’s comments followed a letter from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz demanding that the state take three actions before federal immigration agents would consider reducing their presence in Minneapolis, including turning over voter registration records. Bondi blamed state and local leaders for unrest following the Trump administration’s deployment of ICE officers and said Walz could “restore the rule of law.”
The federal letter came after two fatal shootings by ICE officers in Minneapolis. On January 7, Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed, and less than three weeks later, ICU nurse Alex Pretti, 37, was shot dead during another operation. Both incidents sparked protests, and video footage from bystanders raised questions about federal actions. Federal authorities said Pretti resisted violently, while DHS Secretary Kristi Noem described an official firing “defensive shots.” Walz dismissed those accounts as “nonsense” and “lies.”

Bondi cited sharp increases in violence against ICE officers—1,300 percent—and vehicular attacks on federal agents—3,200 percent—as justification for continued operations. She criticized Walz for calling federal law enforcement “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo” and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for telling ICE to “Get the f*** out of Minneapolis.” Democrats responded with swift condemnation, with Senator Chris Murphy calling the federal demands “a pretext for Trump to take over elections in swing states.”

Governor Walz condemned the letter on social media, writing, “I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.” Bondi, in her letter, insisted Walz “restore the rule of law, support ICE officers and bring an end to the chaos in Minnesota.”
In the midst of the controversy, Vance’s social media post highlighted the partisan tension surrounding the ICE operations, framing Omar’s criticism as overblown and using sarcasm to question her claims about the federal government targeting elections.
