Italian fighters confront Russia’s ‘Black Pearl’ near NATO borders

Italian Eurofighter Typhoons stationed at Ämari Air Base in Estonia intercepted a rare Russian Tu-134UBL aircraft nicknamed “Black Pearl” over the Baltic in November 2025, according to NATO Allied Air Command.

The interception occurred as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, with the Italian jets scrambling to escort multiple Russian military aircraft out of the area.

The Black Pearl

The Black Pearl is a militarized Tu-134 with a bomber-style nose and strategic bomber avionics. Unlike the standard Tu-134 passenger aircraft, the Tu-134UBL variant is used to train Russian Air Force crews for the Tu-160 strategic heavy bomber and Tu-22M3 missions.

The aircraft also doubles as an intelligence platform, making it a particularly valuable asset in Russia’s military operations. The Black Pearl’s distinctive appearance, with its sharp, bomber-like nose, sets it apart from commercial variants of the Tu-134.

The Intercept

The Russian aircraft was flying without a filed flight plan or radio contact when Italian Eurofighters were scrambled to intercept it. The Black Pearl was escorted by Su-30SM fighters and a Su-24 reconnaissance jet.

NATO’s statement confirmed that Italian jets deployed at Ämari scrambled to intercept multiple Russian assets. The Italian pilots shepherded the Russian aircraft out of NATO airspace, maintaining visual contact throughout the operation.

The Italian Air Force Eurofighters have scrambled multiple times in the Baltic amid increased Russian activity, with this intercept being one of several encounters over the past weeks.

Italy’s Baltic Mission

Italy’s presence in Estonia is part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission in the Baltic region. The Italian Air Force has deployed Eurofighter Typhoons to Ämari Air Base to help protect the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, all of which lack their own fighter aircraft capabilities.

The Italian detachment operates under orders from NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Torrejón, Spain, which coordinates all air policing activities across the alliance’s eastern flank.

The Baltic Air Policing mission has been ongoing since 2004, when Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined NATO. The mission has intensified significantly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with increased Russian probing flights testing NATO’s readiness and response times.

Growing Tensions

The episode underscores Russia’s frequent Baltic probing flights and the growing hybrid pressure on NATO’s eastern flank. These flights are seen as tests of NATO’s air defense systems and response capabilities.

Russian aircraft regularly fly near NATO airspace with transponders off and without filing flight plans, forcing NATO fighters to scramble and identify the aircraft. While most encounters remain professional, the frequency of these incidents has raised concerns about the potential for miscalculation.

The use of the Black Pearl for these missions is particularly noteworthy. As a training aircraft for strategic bomber crews, its presence near NATO airspace may signal Russia’s continued emphasis on its long-range strike capabilities, even as it remains engaged in the war in Ukraine.

NATO has maintained that it will continue to defend alliance airspace and respond to all incidents professionally, while warning Russia against increasingly dangerous violations of member states’ sovereignty.
