Greek Airports Halt Flights Nationwide Due to Radio Frequency Failure

A significant disruption to Greece’s air traffic control systems grounded flights at airports across the country on one of the busiest travel days of the holiday period. The incident, caused by a failure in critical radio frequency infrastructure, led to widespread flight cancellations and delays as authorities worked to restore service.

System Failure at Critical Control Centers

The disruption began earlier in the morning when serious problems were recorded with the radio frequencies operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority’s Air Traffic Control Center. The technical issue originated at the facilities of the Athens and Macedonia Area Control Centers located in Elliniko, which are responsible for managing all air traffic within their extensive areas of responsibility.

The problem was isolated to the central radio frequency systems of these two pivotal centers. As a result, air traffic controllers lost their primary means of communication with aircraft, a critical safety system for directing traffic. In immediate response, authorities made the decision to ground all outgoing flights nationwide. Only aircraft that were already airborne at the time of the failure continued to be serviced.

Manual Landings and a Rush to Restore Service

With the automated systems compromised, flights that were in the air and needed to land at Greek airports were required to do so “manually,” a term in aviation terminology referring to procedures conducted without the use of standard automated technical aids. This process requires heightened coordination and slows the overall flow of traffic significantly.

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, in cooperation with the telecommunications company Cosmote, worked urgently to identify the root cause of the failure and restore the systems. The complexity of the fault, however, meant it remained unclear for several hours when full functionality would be returned. The Authority was expected to issue an official announcement detailing the incident and the restoration timeline.

Peak Travel Disrupted

The timing of the failure exacerbated its impact, as it occurred on one of the busiest days of the holiday period. Airports across Greece, particularly the country’s two largest in Athens and Thessaloniki, were experiencing high volumes of traffic with many travelers returning from trips abroad. The grounding led to immediate congestion in terminal buildings as departing passengers were informed of cancellations and delays, while arriving flights were held at their points of origin or diverted.

The nationwide grounding highlighted the dependency of modern aviation on centralized, reliable communication systems. The incident at the Elliniko centers underscored how a single point of technical failure could ripple across the entire national airspace, affecting thousands of passengers during a peak travel window.
