President Donald Trump on February 6, 2026, signed a proclamation restoring commercial fishing access to nearly 5,000 square miles of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument off the coast of New England, the White House said.
The proclamation reverses restrictions imposed under previous administrations that prohibited commercial fishing in the monument. The White House said the move is intended to support U.S. fishermen, strengthen coastal economies, and reduce regulatory barriers for the industry.
Trump, in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, said the proclamation would “restore nearly 5,000 square miles of fishing access” and “strengthen our booming economy.” He added that previous restrictions had been “burdensome and unnecessary” and criticized Democrats for maintaining them.

Another BIG WIN for Maine, and all of New England! Hard to believe you vote for Democrats who did this to you, but not for “TRUMP,” who gets you out of this Environmental and Economic Malaise.… pic.twitter.com/Vhj861mMAV
The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument was established by President Barack Obama in 2016, with commercial fishing prohibited within its boundaries. Trump lifted those restrictions during his first term, while President Joe Biden reinstated them in 2021.
The White House said prohibiting commercial fishing in the monument is not necessary for managing the area, noting that many fish species are highly migratory and already protected under existing laws, including the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
According to the White House, the proclamation is expected to support longline fishing and the Maine lobster industry by providing unfettered access to U.S. coastal waters. It also aligns with Trump’s broader America First Fishing Policy, which the administration said includes measures to reduce regulatory burdens, combat unfair foreign competition, and enhance domestic seafood production.
The proclamation follows similar actions by Trump since returning to office, including signing a proclamation to reopen the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument to commercial fishing, implementing tariffs to protect U.S. seafood industries, and halting offshore wind projects to preserve fishing access.

In his Truth Social post, Trump also urged voters to support Republicans, writing that the move represented a reversal of “disastrous policies” and praising American fishermen for benefiting from the change.
