A Florida gubernatorial candidate said he would revoke driver’s licenses issued to people who did not take their tests in English, following a state announcement that all future driver license exams will be administered only in English.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said on Jan. 30 that beginning Feb. 6, all driver license knowledge and skills exams will be given exclusively in English. The policy applies to all license classifications, including orally administered exams.
Under the new rules, language translation services will no longer be permitted, and printed exams in languages other than English will be removed. Previously, most non-commercial knowledge exams were offered in multiple languages, while commercial license exams were limited to English and Spanish.
In response, gubernatorial candidate Jeff Fishback said in a social media post that he would go further if elected.
As Governor, I’ll go further.

“As Governor, I’ll go further,” Fishback wrote. “I’ll revoke every driver’s license issued to anyone who did not take the test in English.”
FLHSMV said the change is intended to promote clear communication and understanding of traffic laws for drivers in the state.
