STATESVILLE, N.C. — Retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and six other people were killed when a business jet crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina, according to Sky News reporting citing a NASCAR statement and flight‑tracking data.

What happened

Sky News reported that a Cessna C550 business jet erupted into flames when it hit the ground while trying to land at Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles north of Charlotte, shortly after 10 a.m. local time on Thursday.

According to the same report, flight‑tracking data indicated the plane took off from the airport bound for Florida, but returned within minutes.

Victims named in reports

Sky News said NASCAR described itself as devastated by the deaths of Greg Biffle, Biffle’s wife Cristina, daughter Emma and son Ryder, and said NASCAR also named three other people killed: Craig Wadsworth and Dennis and Jack Dutton, all “beloved by many in the NASCAR community,” per the Sky News report.

Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration said the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.
