Brussels – European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced on Monday a decision to ban all Iranian diplomats and representatives from entering the parliament’s premises. The move comes in response to recent protests and violence in Iran, where citizens have been demonstrating against the regime.
“I have taken the decision to ban all diplomatic staff and any other representatives of the Islamic Republic from all European Parliament premises,” Metsola stated.
She emphasized that the ban is a direct reaction to the situation in Iran, where people are standing up for their rights. “As the brave people of Iran continue to stand up for their rights and their liberty, today I have taken the decision to ban all diplomatic staff and any other representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran from all European Parliament premises,” she added in a social media statement. “This House will not aid in legitimising this regime that has sustained itself through torture, repression and murder.”
Metsola further noted, “It cannot be business as usual,” underscoring the parliament’s stance against continuing normal relations amid the unrest.
Amid the ongoing protests in Iran, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued statements addressing perceived external involvement. In one post, he wrote: “Today like the past, the US is wrong in its calculations about Iran.” In another, he stated: “Our enemies don’t know Iran. In the past, the US failed due to their flawed planning. Today too, their flawed scheming will cause them to fail.”
Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump also commented on the situation, warning: “If Iran shots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J.TRUMP”
