A United Airlines flight destined for Tokyo was forced to make an emergency return to Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia on Saturday afternoon following an engine failure shortly after departure, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Incident Details
The incident involved United Flight 803, which was operating on a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. A United spokespersonconfirmed the flight landed shortly after takeoff due to the loss of power in one engine. The FAA has announced it will launch an investigation into the engine failure that occurred during the aircraft’s departure phase.
There were no reported injuries among the 275 passengers and 15 crew members aboard the aircraft, according to Reuters.
Airline Response
United Airlines addressed the situation through a statement posted on its website, acknowledging the disruption to passengers’ travel plans:
“We apologize for unexpectedly returning to Washington Dulles Airport. Our maintenance team needs to service a technical issue on your aircraft before we can depart again. We appreciate your patience, and we’ll keep you updated as we get more information.”
The airline’s characterization of the issue as a “technical issue” aligns with standard communication protocols, though the FAA specifically identified the problem as an engine failure.
Current Status
United is scheduling the flight to resume later on Saturday on a different aircraft, the spokesperson said. The FAA investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the engine failure and determine whether any safety protocols need to be reviewed.
The incident, while causing significant delays for passengers, concluded without injuries, demonstrating the effectiveness of safety protocols when engine malfunctions occur during the critical departure phase of flight.
