Delcy Rodríguez Formally Sworn In as Venezuela’s Interim President Following Maduro’s Arrest

Venezuela’s Vice President and Oil Minister Delcy Rodríguez was formally sworn in as the country’s interim president on Monday, assuming executive authority following the U.S.-led removal of President Nicolás Maduro from power over the weekend.

Swearing-In Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony took place on January 5, 2026, at the National Assembly in Caracas. Rodríguez, a 56-year-old labor lawyer known for her close connections to the private sector and long-standing devotion to the ruling party, took the oath of office. The oath was administered by her brother, Jorge Rodríguez, who serves as the head of the legislature.

Context of Maduro’s Removal

Rodríguez’s ascension to the interim presidency follows a dramatic weekend military action by the Trump administration, which deposed President Nicolás Maduro. Concurrently with Rodríguez’s swearing-in, Maduro appeared in a New York court on Monday to face drug charges. The first lady, Cilia Flores, was not in attendance at the National Assembly ceremony as she is currently in U.S. custody.

New Legislature Convened

Also sworn in during Monday’s session were 283 lawmakers who were elected in a contested vote last May. The majority of the opposition, particularly the faction led by Nobel Prize winner María Corina Machado, boycotted that electoral contest. As a result, only a small number of the newly sworn-in legislators are classed as opposition members.
