Czechia Delivers 1.8 Million Rounds of Ammunition and $288 Million in Military Aid to Ukraine

Former Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala confirmed Friday that the Czech Republic has completed delivery of 1.8 million rounds of large-caliber ammunition to Ukraine, fulfilling a commitment made earlier this year. The deliveries are part of broader Czech military support that has totaled $288 million in equipment and aid.

“I am glad to confirm that we have fulfilled this goal today,” Fiala wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The Czech Initiative

The deliveries are part of a Czech-led international initiative launched in early 2024 to source artillery ammunition for Ukraine from markets outside the European Union. The program matches donations from NATO partner countries with ammunition suppliers identified through Czech government contacts and private companies.

The initiative has raised approximately 1.6 billion euros from participating nations. Major contributors include Germany, which pledged 576 million euros for 180,000 artillery rounds, as well as Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, and Denmark, according to Czech officials.

Delivery Timeline

The first shipments under the initiative arrived in Ukraine in June 2024, with tens of thousands of 155mm caliber rounds delivered initially. By the end of April 2024, 400,000 rounds had been delivered, according to then-Defense Minister Jana Černochová.

By mid-2025, total shipments reached 850,000 shells, including 320,000 NATO standard 155mm artillery projectiles, according to the Czech Defense Ministry’s AMOS international cooperation agency.

The 1.8 million rounds delivered this year represent an increase from the 1.5 million rounds the initiative supplied throughout 2024, which included 500,000 155mm shells.

Strategic Context

Ukraine has faced persistent ammunition shortages as it defends against Russian forces in what is now the third year of full-scale conflict. Artillery ammunition has been particularly critical as both sides rely heavily on cannon fire along the approximately 1,000-kilometer front line.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský stated in April that the initiative had reduced the effectiveness of Russian artillery by 500%, though he did not provide details on how that figure was calculated.

The program guarantees monthly ammunition deliveries to Ukraine through secured financing, according to Lipavský. Czech Prime Minister Fiala said in March that the initiative could match 2024 delivery levels in 2025.

Additional Czech Military Aid

Beyond the ammunition initiative, the Czech Republic has provided direct military assistance from its own stocks. As of May 2024, the Czech Defense Ministry reported donating equipment worth 288 million dollars, including eight aircraft, 62 tanks, 131 infantry fighting vehicles, 13 howitzers, and 12 multiple rocket launchers.

The Czech government has positioned the ammunition initiative as a flagship effort in its support for Ukraine. The program leverages Czech traditional arms trading contacts and expertise to expedite deliveries that might otherwise be delayed by standard procurement processes.
