Rep. Keith Self of Texas announced that the Sharia-Free America Caucus has grown to 42 members, representing 20 states, signaling continued expansion of the group co-founded to oppose what its leaders describe as the influence of Sharia law in the United States. “America’s culture, history, and rugged spirit make us exceptional. Sharia stands opposed to our Constitution and way of life,” Self said in a post. “DEFEND THE WEST.”

The caucus, initially launched by Self and Rep. Chip Roy on December 18, 2025, began with 26 members from 17 states. Whenever It had reached 40 members Rep. Chip Roy highlighted the rapid growth and increasing support among House Republicans. “The Sharia-Free America Caucus has now reached 40 members! Sharia law has no place in America, not now or ever,” Roy said, underscoring the caucus’s stated mission of defending what its founders describe as the constitutional framework and Judeo-Christian heritage of the United States.
Self has framed the caucus as a response to what he calls the spread of Sharia principles that conflict with American legal and civic norms. He described Sharia as an alternative legal system that stands “in direct opposition” to individual freedoms and constitutional governance. “This is an alternate legal construct that they have, where our system is based on individual freedoms, individual rights given to us by our creator. Sharia is a legal construct that says you will submit to this very draconian legal construct,” Self said. He emphasized that the caucus’s legislative goals include preventing U.S. courts from recognizing Sharia court decrees or judgments, a step he described as essential to maintaining uniformity under American law.
There is nothing theoretical about the threat of Sharia in America.

We have already seen its consequences play out in parts of Europe—now the same ideology is being pushed here.

Roy has similarly emphasized that the caucus’s focus is on legal codes rather than religious belief. During a House Judiciary Committee hearing titled “Sharia-Free America,” he argued that Sharia is incompatible with the Constitution, asserting it “fails to include due process, treats non-Muslims as second-class citizens, and prescribes barbaric punishments,” while allowing practices such as polygamy and corporal punishment. “This is not about having the freedom of worshiping a religion of one’s choosing, such as Islam,” Roy said. “It’s about opposing forcing a foreign legal code that is incompatible with our laws and legal system onto the United States.”
Rep. Roy in opening statement on the threat of Sharia law: "Sharia encourages violence, silences dissent, rejects religious freedom and subjugates women and children. Let's be clear, this is not about having the freedom of worshiping a religion of one's choosing, such as Islam,… pic.twitter.com/DstmKdXi4T

The caucus now counts 42 members, including representatives from across the country, and continues to grow. Self and Roy have described the effort as both a legislative and cultural initiative aimed at educating lawmakers and the public about the caucus’s mission, defending what they describe as American principles, and promoting legislation to safeguard the Constitution. Self characterized the movement as a defense of the nation’s founding principles and warned against allowing foreign legal systems to operate in the U.S., drawing parallels to challenges faced in parts of Europe. “America is governed by the Constitution and the rule of law. If you reject those principles, leave,” he said.
The Sharia-Free America Caucus represents a focused effort within the House to address what its members identify as threats to the nation’s legal and cultural framework. Its continued expansion reflects growing visibility and debate among lawmakers regarding the influence of foreign legal systems, the boundaries of constitutional governance, and the protection of what caucus members describe as Western civilization.
