“America Is Losing Its Americanness,” — Nation’s First Muslim Somali-American Mayor Expresses Anxiety Among Somalis — “We’re Seeing It Slowly Dismantle Into Something That Is Not Recognizable”

Nadia Mohamed, the mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and the nation’s first elected Somali-American mayor, has drawn attention with recent remarks in a video expressing concern that America is gradually losing its core identity. As a Muslim who immigrated from Somalia at age 10 and became the youngest Muslim mayor in the country upon her election in 2023, Mohamed spoke about fears within the Somali community amid ongoing national debates over immigration and cultural changes.

In the video, Mohamed described widespread anxiety among many Somalis in her community. She said that most are afraid they are about to lose their home, not because they face eviction or deportation as American citizens, but because the country appears to be slowly dismantling into something unrecognizable. “When we look at America, we’re seeing it slowly dismantle into something that is not recognizable, that America is losing its Americanness, right?” she stated. She emphasized that this concern differs from claims made by supporters of the Make America Great Again movement, clarifying, “Not in the same way that MAGA says it. No, no, no, no. But because, like, it is just slowly becoming something that we don’t recognize it to be America, right?”

Her perspective highlights how shifts in the country’s direction can evoke a sense of alienation among those who have built lives here as citizens. St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis with a growing immigrant population.

Her remarks have intersected with parallel conversations in Congress about preserving American values against perceived external influences. On December 18, 2025, Representatives Keith Self (TX-03) and Chip Roy (TX-21) launched the Sharia Free America Caucus to address what they describe as the dangers of Sharia law and its incompatibility with the U.S. Constitution. The caucus, which has grown to twenty-six members from seventeen states since its formation, focuses on protecting civil liberties, individual freedoms, and founding principles.

“Preserving the American way of life is essential to protecting civil liberties and upholding the United States Constitution. Sharia stands in direct opposition to our country and is totally anathema to the concept of individual freedom and our founding principles,” said Congressman Self. He thanked colleagues for joining what he called a noble cause to save Western civilization and resist the threat of Sharia.

Congressman Roy echoed that view, stating, “Sharia is a direct threat to our Constitution and Western values and seeks to replace our legal system and erode our basic freedoms. Our immigration system must be prepared to confront this challenge and defend our Judeo-Christian values.” He expressed pride in co-chairing the caucus with Self and noted encouragement from the growing membership, underscoring that the preservation of America and Western civilization depends on such efforts.

These developments reflect broader national anxieties about identity, immigration, and the future direction of the country as policymakers and community leaders grapple with rapid demographic and policy changes in early 2026. Mohamed’s video and the caucus’s formation illustrate contrasting yet overlapping concerns about what constitutes the essential character of America today.
