“The Trump Administration Is Trying to Beat Us Into Submission Rather Than Protect Us,” Ilhan Omar Insists — “This Isn’t Isolated or Accidental”

In the wake of a federal law‑enforcement shooting that left a Minneapolis man dead Saturday, Representative Ilhan Omar (D‑Minn.) issued a forceful condemnation of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy, characterizing the incident as part of a broader pattern of state violence rather than an isolated law‑enforcement encounter.

“This appears to be an execution by immigration enforcement,” Omar said in a statement released after the fatal shooting. “I am absolutely heartbroken, horrified, and appalled that federal agents murdered another member of our community. It is beyond shameful these federal agents are targeting our residents instead of protecting them.”

Federal authorities say Border Patrol agents fired defensive shots after the man approached them with a 9 mm handgun and two magazines during a targeted operation in Minneapolis. Medics on the scene provided aid, but the 37‑year‑old was pronounced dead. The Department of Homeland Security described the encounter as officers acting to protect themselves and fellow agents.

Omar rejected that characterization, asserting the federal response is part of a deliberate effort by the Trump administration to intimidate and suppress local communities under the pretext of immigration enforcement. “This isn’t isolated or accidental. The Trump administration is trying to beat us into submission rather than protect us,” she said, adding that the administration is violating constitutional rights while operating in Minnesota.

Omar called for ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to withdraw from Minnesota immediately, arguing their presence “terrorizes our communities, violates rights, and takes lives with zero accountability.” She lamented that Minnesota, “once a place of refuge,” has been transformed into a setting where “unchecked federal forces murder our neighbors.”

Her statement comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in Minneapolis over federal immigration enforcement. Just weeks earlier, protests erupted after an ICE agent fatally shot Renée Good, a 37‑year‑old woman, prompting tens of thousands to rally in the city and calls from local leaders for federal agents to leave.

The latest shooting — the second involving federal agents in Minneapolis this month — has reignited fierce debate about the role of immigration enforcement in urban communities, with lawmakers, activists and residents sharply divided over public safety, civil rights and the presence of federal personnel in local jurisdictions.

Omar’s remarks align with broader calls from local and national Democrats to end the immigration operation in the state, reflecting deep mistrust of federal agents’ actions and growing political pressure on the administration — even as city leaders urge calm and patience while investigations continue.
