Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas renewed his pledge to impeach President Donald Trump on the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots with a public statement. Green cited Trump’s use of military force in Venezuela as unconstitutional, arguing it relied on an indictment rather than proper congressional authority.
Green declared: “This is a day to recall what happened when the citadel of democracy was assaulted by insurrectionists. We can never allow it to happen again. It should not have happened then.” He added: “But I pledge to you that I will do all that I can, including make efforts to impeach Donald John Trump, for all that he has done to create this stain on the citadel of democracy.”

In his remarks, Green focused on the Venezuela operation, stating: “I will bring articles of impeachment against the President of the United States of America for taking our military to war against Venezuela. For doing it based upon some theory that in and of itself does not align with the Constitution. Some theory that if you have an indictment, you can now send in the police or the Justice Department and various officers associated. You can send them in to do something—in this case, to seize the president of a country and use the military to back them up.”
He rejected comparisons to past actions, saying: “I marvel at how people will say, ‘Well, they did it in Panama. If we did it in Panama, we can do it here.’ God, this is endless of things that have been done that were wrong. At some point, we had to stop.” Green continued: “The Constitution is above indictments… An indictment is no constitutional reason to send the military, to send a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, to send planes in large numbers, to send other military paraphernalia. Indictments don’t accord you that, Mr. President.”
Green concluded: “The only way we can stop this is with impeachment… He needs to be impeached. He needs to be convicted. And he needs to be removed from office.”
Green has consistently pursued impeachment against Trump. In May 2025, he introduced articles claiming Trump was “unfit to be President.” In December of the previous year, he attempted another effort that failed to secure sufficient votes. Trump’s two impeachments during his first presidency both ended in Senate acquittals.
Green’s criticism of Trump has been consistent. In March 2025, during Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, Green was removed from the House chamber after interrupting the president and refusing to sit down following warnings from Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). Johnson directed the sergeant-at-arms to restore order after Green asserted that Trump had no mandate to cut Medicaid.

Trump has dismissed impeachment attempts. At an April rally the previous year, he mocked the efforts: “Today they did it again. Some guy that I’ve never heard of… is he a congressman? This guy, he said; ‘ladies and gentlemen, I am going to start the impeachment of Donald Trump.’ What the hell did I do? Here we go again.”
