“THANK YOU, President Trump,” Rep. Luna Praises Trump’s Push For Voter ID — “Americans On BOTH Sides Of The Aisle Agree That This Is One Of, If Not THE MOST Important Issue In Our Country Right Now For Securing Our Elections And Saving Our Country”

Representative Anna Paulina Luna publicly thanked President Donald J. Trump for highlighting the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, during his first State of the Union address of his second term. Luna described Trump’s mention of the legislation as a critical step in securing elections and ensuring that only eligible Americans are allowed to vote. In her post, she wrote, “THANK YOU President Trump for giving the SAVE America Act a shout out in your SOTU speech. Americans on BOTH sides of the aisle agree that this is one of, if not THE MOST important issue in our country right now for securing our elections and saving our country.”

Trump’s address emphasized stricter voter verification, citizenship confirmation, and limitations on mail-in ballots, framing these measures as essential to preventing election fraud. The president specifically called on Congress to approve the SAVE Act, arguing that both Republican and Democratic voters overwhelmingly support the principle that all voters must show identification and proof of citizenship. He criticized Democratic opposition, stating, “Isn’t that a shame? You should be ashamed of yourself not standing up,” while calling for an end to sanctuary cities and stricter enforcement of immigration laws. Trump also outlined specific exceptions for mail-in voting, allowing them only for military personnel, disabled citizens, those with illnesses, or Americans traveling abroad.

Luna has long framed the SAVE Act as a necessary safeguard for federal elections. In earlier statements, she insisted, “IF YOU ARE NOT AN AMERICAN YOU DO NOT GET TO VOTE IN OUR ELECTIONS. This is not some radical extremist position, it’s common sense and it’s the ONLY way to secure our elections moving forward. If we don’t send the SAVE America Act to President Trump’s desk we lose our nation.”

The legislation requires individuals registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. It prohibits states from processing voter registration applications without this verification, mandates alternative procedures for those who need them, and directs states to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls. The bill also establishes criminal penalties for election officials who register individuals without proof of citizenship, provides a private right of action against officials who violate these rules, and tasks the Election Assistance Commission with issuing guidance to states within ten days of enactment.

Supporters, including Luna, argue that the SAVE America Act is vital for preserving election integrity and preventing unauthorized voting. Critics contend that the requirements could create barriers to voter registration and disproportionately impact certain populations, fueling ongoing debate over balancing election security and voter access.

By publicly praising Trump and reiterating her commitment to the SAVE America Act, Luna reinforced the alignment between her priorities and the president’s focus on election integrity. Her remarks and the broader conversation underscore the central role voter ID and citizenship verification are expected to play in shaping federal elections moving forward.
