“Six Million Individual Lives Destroyed by Hatred” — UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy Honors Holocaust Victims

Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Lammy marked Holocaust Memorial Day by reflecting on the scale and human cost of the Holocaust. “The Holocaust was the systematic murder of six million Jews—six million individual lives destroyed by hatred,” Lammy said. “Having recently visited the Majdanek concentration camp and seen the horrors first hand, I mark Holocaust Memorial Day committed to remembrance, challenging antisemitism, and ensuring ‘never again’ means never again.”

The Holocaust, which took place during World War II, was a state-sponsored campaign of genocide carried out by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. It targeted Jews as well as other groups, including Romani people, disabled individuals, political dissidents, and others deemed undesirable by the Nazi regime. Over six million Jews were murdered through mass shootings, forced labor, starvation, and gas chambers, leaving a legacy of trauma that continues to resonate today.

Majdanek, located near Lublin, Poland, was one of the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Established in 1941, it was used for forced labor, imprisonment, and systematic killing. Tens of thousands of prisoners died there due to starvation, disease, executions, and mass gassings. Today, the site serves as a museum and memorial, preserving evidence of the atrocities committed and educating visitors about the Holocaust.

Lammy’s visit to Majdanek and his statement underscore ongoing efforts to remember the victims of the Holocaust while confronting antisemitism in the present. Holocaust Memorial Day, observed annually, is a time to reflect on the consequences of hatred and intolerance, and to reaffirm a commitment to preventing such atrocities in the future.
