Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued a pointed statement on X regarding the recent deployment of federal officers to the state under former President Donald Trump’s direction. The statement, posted on January 10, 2026, highlights concerns over the actions of these officers and urges restraint amid potential unrest.
In the post, Walz directly referenced the incident that has become a flashpoint in Minneapolis, writing: “Trump sent thousands of armed federal officers into our state, and it took just one day for them to kill someone. Now he wants nothing more than to see chaos distract from that horrific action. Don’t give him what he wants.”
The governor’s message stems from an ongoing situation involving the rapid deployment of federal law enforcement — including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents — to Minneapolis as part of what federal officials have described as a major immigration enforcement operation. Shortly after these forces arrived, a federal ICE agent fatally shot a 37-year-old woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, during a traffic encounter. Federal authorities have defended the agent’s actions, claiming the vehicle posed a threat, while witnesses and local leaders dispute that account.
The deadly shooting has sparked widespread outrage and protests, both in Minnesota and across the country, further fueling debates over the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies and use of federal officers far from the border. Walz’s statement underscores his belief that the deployment was reckless and has only exacerbated tensions.
Walz has also expressed frustration over how the investigation into the shooting is being handled, urging that Minnesota officials be allowed to participate fully in determining the facts. His call to avoid chaos suggests he is responding to escalating tensions, emphasizing the need to focus on accountability for the death rather than allowing distractions to overshadow it. Critics of the federal operation argue that the presence of heavily armed officers and the tragic outcome have heightened community fears and undermined public trust.
