President Donald Trump said Greenland is “imperative for National and World Security” and declared that “there can be no going back” on the issue.
In the post, Trump said he and Rutte discussed Greenland’s strategic importance and agreed to hold a meeting involving multiple parties in Davos, Switzerland. Trump framed the issue as central to global stability, linking Greenland’s role to U.S. military strength, NATO security interests, and what he described as America’s unique ability to maintain peace worldwide.

Call with NATO chief and planned Davos meeting
Trump said the discussion with Rutte focused specifically on Greenland and its security significance within the NATO alliance and beyond. He said the two agreed to convene talks with “the various parties” in Davos, a location often used for high-level diplomatic and geopolitical discussions.
“I had a very good telephone call with Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, concerning Greenland,” Trump wrote. “I agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland.”
Trump did not identify which countries or officials would take part, but the comments suggest involvement from NATO allies and other stakeholders with interests in the Arctic region.
‘Imperative for National and World Security’
At the center of Trump’s statement was his assertion that Greenland holds critical strategic value. He said he made that position clear during the discussions and described it as a point of broad agreement.
“As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security,” Trump wrote. “There can be no going back — On that, everyone agrees!”
Greenland’s geographic position between North America and Europe has long made it strategically important for military operations, missile defense, and Arctic surveillance. Its importance has grown in recent years as melting ice has increased access to Arctic shipping routes and intensified competition among global powers for influence in the region.
Emphasis on U.S. military strength
Trump also used the post to highlight U.S. military power, calling the United States “the most powerful Country anywhere on the Globe, by far.” He credited that position to a rebuilding of the military during his first term, which he said is continuing at an accelerated pace.
“Much of the reason for this is a rebuilding of our Military during my First Term, which rebuilding continues at even more expedited pace,” Trump wrote.
He presented U.S. military dominance as a key factor underpinning both national and global security.
‘Peace through strength’
Echoing a core theme of his presidency, Trump argued that peace is maintained through strength rather than restraint. He said the United States plays a singular role in preventing global conflict by projecting power.
“We are the only POWER that can ensure PEACE throughout the World,” Trump wrote, adding that peace is achieved “quite simply, through STRENGTH!”
The remarks align with Trump’s long-standing “peace through strength” approach to foreign policy, which emphasizes deterrence, military readiness, and U.S. leadership within alliances such as NATO.
Renewed focus on Greenland’s strategic role
Trump’s comments place renewed attention on Greenland amid heightened global interest in the Arctic. The region has become increasingly significant as climate change alters access to natural resources and transportation routes, prompting NATO and rival powers alike to reassess their strategic positions.
By stating that there is “no going back,” Trump underscored his view that Greenland’s importance to U.S. and allied security is settled and irreversible, framing it as a foundational element of broader efforts to ensure stability in an increasingly competitive global environment.
