Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has raised its travel advisory for Iran to the highest level, warning citizens to avoid travel to the country and urging those already there to leave immediately. The move comes amid ongoing nationwide protests and a government crackdown.
MOFA Raises Alert to Level 4
On January 13, 2026, MOFA elevated its advisory to a level 4 red alert, the highest level in Taiwan’s travel warning system. The ministry cited escalating unrest and safety concerns as the reason for the heightened alert.
The advisory explicitly urges Taiwanese citizens not to travel to Iran at this time. For those already in the country, MOFA recommends departing as soon as possible to avoid potential danger.
According to MOFA, five Taiwanese nationals currently in Iran have all been reported safe. The ministry is closely monitoring developments in the country through its representative office in Dubai to ensure the wellbeing of its citizens.
Context and Importance
The travel alert comes as Iran continues to experience widespread protests, which have prompted a strong government crackdown. By issuing a level 4 warning, Taiwan is signaling the severity of the situation and emphasizing the potential risks to its citizens abroad. Travel advisories at this level are rarely issued, highlighting the gravity of the unrest.
MOFA’s ongoing monitoring through its Dubai office underscores Taiwan’s efforts to maintain communication and provide assistance to nationals in areas of heightened risk.
