Sen. Dave McCormick: “I Do Not Support Taking It by Military Force” Amid Trump’s “Doing It the ‘Hard Way’” Remarks on Greenland

U.S. Senator Dave McCormick stated on Friday that he does not support using military force to acquire Greenland, while agreeing with President Donald Trump that the island is strategically important and that the U.S. should strengthen ties with it.

On Fox Business, McCormick said: “I agree with President Trump that Greenland is enormously strategic for the U.S., and we should strengthen our relationship. Whether that comes through a voluntary purchase, U.S. investment, or simply deepening the already strong partnership remains to be seen. I do not support taking it by military force. The focus should be on diplomacy and commerce.”

The Pennsylvania Republican referenced a recent meeting with Denmark’s prime minister and highlighted an existing defense treaty that could serve as a foundation for expanded cooperation.

McCormick’s comments came shortly after President Trump made remarks during a White House meeting with oil and gas executives on January 9, 2026, where he expressed openness to acquiring Greenland through various means if necessary. Trump told reporters: “We are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not, because if we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor.”

He added: “I would like to make a deal, you know, the easy way. But if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way.”

Trump justified the position by emphasizing ownership for stronger defense, stating: “When we own it, we defend it. You don’t defend leases the same way.” He also questioned Denmark’s historical claim, noting: “I’m a fan of Denmark… but, you know, the fact that they had a boat land there 500 years ago doesn’t mean that they own the land.”

The U.S. has operated Thule Air Base in Greenland since World War II under agreements with Denmark, the sovereign power over the autonomous territory. Greenlandic and Danish officials have previously rejected outright sale proposals, though discussions on enhanced military cooperation have occurred.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with his Danish counterpart to address issues related to Greenland, according to recent administration statements. Trump’s remarks have drawn international attention, including concerns from European allies about sovereignty in the Arctic region.
