“Schumer Does Not Want Voter ID Because They’re Actively Importing Illegals,” Rep. Anna Paulina Accuses

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna escalated her criticism of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats over the SAVE Act, accusing them of blocking voter identification requirements for political reasons and tying the dispute to broader fights over immigration, federal spending, and government funding.

Schumer has repeatedly argued that the bill would suppress voters and compared it to Jim Crow-era voting laws, pledging that it would not advance in the Senate. Luna’s latest statement sharpened that conflict by directly challenging Democratic motives and warning of consequences for unrelated legislative priorities.

“I hope Americans are watching: Schumer does not want voter ID because they’re actively importing illegals,” Luna said. She also accused Democrats of seeking “billions of dollars in taxpayer funds for their pet projects” while having “successfully negotiated defunding the DHS,” framing the SAVE Act fight as part of a larger debate over border security and federal priorities.

Democrats have rejected claims that they are defunding the Department of Homeland Security, arguing instead that funding negotiations reflect oversight concerns and broader budget constraints. Republicans, including Luna, have pointed to proposed funding reductions and policy limits as evidence that Democrats are weakening border enforcement while opposing voter ID measures.

Luna went on to argue that the SAVE Act’s future in the Senate hinges on procedural decisions or internal Democratic dissent. “The SAVE Act is dead on arrival unless Thune removes the filibuster or Democrats break from Schumer to save their own billions of dollars in projects,” she said. The reference to Senate Republican Leader John Thune highlights the procedural hurdles facing the bill. Under current Senate rules, most legislation requires 60 votes to advance, giving the minority party significant leverage through the filibuster. Schumer has made clear that Democrats intend to use that leverage to block the SAVE Act if it reaches the Senate floor.

Luna’s comments underscore how the debate over voter ID has expanded beyond election policy into a broader clash over immigration, government funding, and Senate procedure. With appropriations deadlines approaching and both parties warning of potential shutdowns, the SAVE Act has become a flashpoint in negotiations that extend well beyond voting law itself.
