Satellite imagery has captured the movement of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its strike group as it heads from the South China Sea toward the Middle East, according to Copernicus, a company that monitors maritime traffic.
The Pentagon confirmed on Thursday that it is repositioning the carrier strike group amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran. The Lincoln’s strike group includes fighter jets, guided missile destroyers, and at least one attack submarine. The journey from the Indo-Pacific region is expected to take about a week, a source told NewsNation.
The redeployment follows heightened unrest in Iran, where economic conditions have triggered mass protests since late December. Reports suggest that over 2,600 protesters have been killed and more than 184,000 detained, although exact numbers remain difficult to verify due to government-imposed internet restrictions.
President Trump has signaled support for the Iranian protesters, urging them to continue challenging the regime and warning that “help is on the way.” While the president has so far refrained from striking Iran, U.S. officials have indicated that any large-scale attack would require additional troops and equipment in the region to protect American forces and manage potential retaliation.
In a related development, U.S. diplomats have advised American personnel to leave the U.S. military base in Qatar as a precautionary measure amid escalating regional tensions. The recommendation underscores growing concerns within the U.S. government about potential retaliatory actions or spillover effects stemming from increased military activity and political instability in the Middle East. While Qatar hosts several key U.S. military assets and serves as a strategic hub for operations across the region, officials say the precautionary advice is aimed at ensuring the safety of service members and civilian staff as geopolitical pressures rise.
A senior official told The New York Times that Trump is considering targeting ballistic missile sites and elements of Iran’s domestic security apparatus, though any strike “is at least several days away.” Meanwhile, Tehran has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) restricting flights in and out of Tehran and reportedly signaled plans for trials and executions of protesters.
The administration also announced new sanctions on individuals and networks linked to the Iranian regime’s crackdown on demonstrators and alleged financial schemes diverting Iran’s natural resource revenues.
The USS Abraham Lincoln was deployed in late November from San Diego without prior public announcement of its destination. Satellite images now provide the first visual confirmation of its westward movement toward the Middle East, highlighting the Pentagon’s strategic positioning amid ongoing political and security concerns in the region.
