Noem Snaps at Jake Tapper — ‘Why Are We Arguing with a President Who’s Working to Keep People Safe? Why Are We Arguing with Law Enforcement?’

In a Sunday appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed mounting criticism surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Minneapolis. The incident, which occurred earlier in the week, involved an ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, amid heightened federal immigration enforcement activities in Minnesota.

The discussion with host Jake Tapper centered on the broader context of the operation and the specific use of force. Noem emphasized the purpose of the ongoing ICE efforts, stating that agents were targeting serious criminals. She questioned the opposition to federal law enforcement actions, saying:

“…why are we arguing with a president who’s working to keep people safe? Why are we arguing with law enforcement operations that have gone on in this country for years and we’re working to collect murderers and rapists and drug traffickers and fraudsters off the streets of Minnesota, and we don’t have local law enforcement and local elected officials that are partnering with us to help do that work?”

Noem highlighted public support for safer communities, noting that “overwhelmingly, the people in this country said they wanted America to be safe again, that they didn’t want dangerous criminals on our streets.” She urged elected leaders in Minneapolis and Minnesota to cooperate with federal authorities to facilitate operations without resistance or inflammatory language.

The exchange turned to the specifics of the shooting when Tapper referenced DHS policy on the use of deadly force, which authorizes it only “when no reasonably effective, safe and feasible alternatives appears to exist.” He asked whether the officer could have simply “gotten out of the way.”

Noem defended the agent’s actions, describing him as “a highly experienced law enforcement officer” with “years of training and specialized training for these types of situations.” She expressed relief that the officer survived the encounter, calling the overall situation tragic while stressing the need for a thorough investigation into the individual’s motivations.

“We’re grateful that he’s alive. It’s a tragic situation. And we’re going to continue to work on the investigation into the individual and find out what the motivations were behind our actions that day.”

Tapper responded by acknowledging shared relief that the officer was unharmed.
