Leavitt Defends Trump Canceling Elections as Joke, Fires Back at Reporter — “Only Someone Like You Would Take It So Seriously and Pose It as a Question That Way”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday defended President Trump’s recent remarks about potentially canceling elections, pushing back against reporters who suggested the comments were a threat to American democracy.

The remarks came after a reporter referenced Trump’s interview with Reuters, in which the president discussed the idea of canceling elections. Leavitt, who was present for the closed-door discussion, said the president was joking and spoke facetiously. “I believe you’re referring to the president’s interview with Reuters last night. I was in that interview. It was a closed-door discussion, so there was no audio or video. The president was simply joking. He was saying, ‘We’re doing such a great job. We’re doing everything the American people thought. Maybe we should just keep rolling.’ But he was speaking facetiously,” Leavitt said.

When pressed further about whether Trump found the idea of canceling elections funny, Leavitt challenged the reporter’s framing. “Andrew, were you in the room? No, you weren’t. I was in the room. I heard the conversation. Only someone like you would take it so seriously and pose it as a question that way,” she said.

Leavitt added that questions like these reflect a broader bias in media coverage. “The question you just raised and your answer proves your bias. You should be reporting on the facts. You should be reporting on the cases,” she said, emphasizing that the president’s comments were not intended as a policy statement.

The exchange comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Trump’s rhetoric and the administration’s frequent use of hyperbole in both public remarks and private discussions. Leavitt’s defense frames the president’s statements as humor rather than a genuine threat to democratic processes.
