Former Vice President Kamala Harris issued a forceful statement in response to the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37‑year‑old Minneapolis resident and intensive care unit nurse, by federal law enforcement officers. Her remarks placed the incident within a broader critique of federal immigration enforcement operations and underscored public outrage over the use of force.
“Alex Jeffrey Pretti was an ICU nurse at a VA hospital. His life, through his profession, was dedicated to serving his community and our country,” Harris wrote in a post on social media. She highlighted Pretti’s dedication to his work caring for veterans and described his final actions as protective rather than threatening.

“As so many have now seen on video, his final act before he was killed by federal agents was doing everything in his power to protect his community,” Harris continued, framing the incident as a tragedy with profound local impact. “Alex and tens of thousands of Minnesotans have boldly defended their neighbors against the murderous occupation of an American city by the federal government. I am enraged and heartbroken for Alex, his family, Minneapolis, and America.”
Pretti’s death occurred on January 24 during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis conducted by Department of Homeland Security law enforcement officers. Federal authorities said the operation targeted an illegal alien wanted for violent assault, and they released a statement saying a man approached U.S. Border Patrol agents with a 9 mm semi‑automatic handgun and resisted disarmament, prompting an agent to fire defensive shots. The man, identified as Pretti, was pronounced dead at the scene. DHS noted he had two magazines and no identification at the time.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara later confirmed that Pretti was a lawful gun owner with no significant criminal history, and family members described him as compassionate and dedicated to helping others.

Harris’s statement resonates with broader criticism from Democratic lawmakers and civil rights advocates who argue that the heavy deployment of federal agents in the city — including thousands sent as part of Operation Metro Surge — has escalated tensions rather than improved public safety. Large protests have taken place in Minneapolis in recent weeks, with many residents and community leaders calling for federal immigration enforcement to end.
The Minneapolis incident has become a flashpoint in the ongoing national debate over immigration policy, federal authority, and accountability for law enforcement actions, with Harris’s statement amplifying calls for oversight and accountability in the wake of Pretti’s death.
