No U.S. politician with potential for a 2028 presidential campaign currently has a favorability rating above 50 percent, according to a national poll released by Emerson College Polling on Wednesday.
Vice President JD Vance led the surveyed figures with 46 percent favorable views, while 41 percent viewed him unfavorably and 13 percent were unsure or had no opinion. Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has never held elected office, ranked second at 40 percent favorable, with 46 percent unfavorable and 14 percent unsure.
House Speaker Mike Johnson received 35 percent favorability, with 38 percent unfavorable and 28 percent unsure or unaware of him. Democratic governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gavin Newsom of California each scored 33 percent favorability. Newsom had 44 percent unfavorable, while Shapiro had 27 percent unfavorable and 40 percent unsure or unaware.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) had 32 percent favorability, 44 percent unfavorable and 24 percent unsure. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani had 26 percent favorability, 42 percent unfavorable and 32 percent unsure. Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who retired earlier this month, had the lowest rating among those listed at 17 percent favorable, with 50 percent unfavorable and one-third unsure.
The poll also measured President Trump’s job approval at 41 percent, with 50 percent disapproval—a reversal from January 2025 when approval stood at 52 percent and disapproval at 48 percent. Respondents graded Trump on key issues using an A-to-F scale: immigration received the highest marks (37 percent A, 36 percent F), while healthcare ranked lowest (14 percent A, 38 percent F). On the economy, 22 percent gave an A and 36 percent an F; on affordability, 17 percent A and 38 percent F.

The Emerson College Polling survey was conducted January 17-19, 2026, among 1,000 likely voters, with a credibility interval of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The poll was weighted by gender, education, race, age, party registration and region based on U.S. Census parameters and voter file data.
Full results and methodology are available on the Emerson College Polling website. No immediate response from the White House or the figures mentioned was available following the poll release. The survey was reported by outlets including The Independent on January 22, 2026.
