California Governor Gavin Newsom reacted swiftly to the news that Greg Bovino has been removed from his role as Border Patrol “commander at large,” posting on social media: “Gestapo Greg is out. Keep the pressure up. It’s working.” He didn’t stop there, adding pointedly: “Now do Stephen Miller,” referencing the United States Homeland Security Advisor widely known as an architect of the administration’s hardline immigration policies.

Newsom’s comments come amid heightened tensions between Trump loyalists and Democratic leaders, particularly on immigration enforcement and federal operations in Democratic-led cities. Bovino, who had become the public face of a traveling immigration crackdown—including Minneapolis, Chicago, and Charlotte—was removed shortly after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, an intensive-care nurse, by Border Patrol agents under his command.

Bovino had repeatedly defended agents in the media and blamed Pretti and local officials for the incident, despite video evidence contradicting those claims.

This isn’t the first time Newsom has targeted Miller. During a recent World Economic Forum event, the governor publicly mocked Miller for avoiding eye contact during a backstage encounter, calling him a “total beta.” The jab highlighted Newsom’s disdain for Trump-era officials and their influence, both domestically and on the international stage.

Total beta!
As federal operations continue to evolve following Bovino’s removal and Trump’s appointment of Tom Homan as “border czar” in Minnesota, Newsom’s comments reflect both political calculation and a sustained effort to challenge former administration policies in a highly public way.
